2025-2026, partnering with the Bastrop HS

This year the Bastrop County Amateur Radio Club (BCARC) received an email from a student,  Aiden Nesbitt, at Bastrop High School asking for assistance in growing Amateur Radio participation at the school. BCARC took this request very seriously and gathered donated radios for this effort.

On October 15, 2025 at 3 pm BCARC made presentation of radios to the NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) class. This page is a summary of the event!

From the left, Bruce, Jim, Dwight, Al, Herb, Steve, Mike, Mickey and Bill behind the camera gathering before the event…
Club president Steve, member Dwight and Commander David Ellis meeting before the event.
Club treasurer Mike and president Steve with the donated equipment. On the left, a power supply, in the middle a VHF UHF radio and on the right an HF radio.

The power supply can power both units. The VHF/UHF radio is a Retevis and the HF radio is a Yaesu FT-710. Both radios are extremely capable current technology!

We didn’t all fit in the classroom. There were 20+ students there to view the presentation. Commander David Ellis is on the left.
Steve shared that learning the technology involved in ham radio is like adding tools to your toolbox of life.
Mike, having had a career in electronics shared that the Amateur radio call sign is a great addition to your resume.
Jim shared career objectives. He is our resident CW expert sending and receiving morse code at 20+ words per minute!
Al shared that hams are usually willing to help each other and that hams are friendly people. Al has been a ham for over 50 years and has worked 140 countries!.
After the meeting we all gathered outside under the NJROTC banner. NC1 Joe Januchowski: Naval Science Instructor, is on the left front. Old and prospective new hams together!
We are grateful to Aiden Nesbitt, KJ5KHS, for sending the original email and getting the ball rolling. BCARC looks forward to helping with technical QnA as needed this school year.
